About
Amelia Wawrzon is a London-based, Australian-born Polish-heritage operatic soprano celebrated for her crystalline vocal quality, emotional and dramatic versatility and magnetic stage presence. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, Amelia completed her Master of Arts (Performance), refining her artistry under the guidance of some of the world’s foremost vocal pedagogues. Prior to this, she earned both her Bachelor of Music (Performance) and Master of Music (Opera Performance) degrees from the University of Melbourne, Conservatorium of Music, graduating with First Class Honours.
She was a member of the Melbourne Opera Richard Divall Emerging Artists Programme (YAP), an emerging artist with Victorian Opera, the winner of the Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Prize in the 98th Herald Sun Aria Competition, a grant recipient from the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Awards Foundation and the winner of the Italian Opera Ambassadorial Prize at the Bel Canto Acclaim Awards.
In 2024, Amelia made operatic history by originating the role of the young bride and heroine Afira in the groundbreaking world premiere of Zarqa al Yamama (Bradshaw), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia performing alongside acclaimed Mezzo-Soprano Dame Sarah Connolly. ‘Zarqa’, based on a pre-Islamic Arabian folkloric tale, is a bold fusion of Western grand opera and Arabic musical traditions, the first Arabic Grand Opera produced in the Kingdom and the largest ever written and performed in Arabic. The role of Afira is deeply emotional and symbolic as it marks a philosophical shift, echoing themes of transformation, cultural legacy and the endurance of truth.
Her other operatic roles include Pamina (Mozart), Lauretta (Puccini), Soeur Constance (Poulenc), Cupidon and Juno (Offenbach), Miss Wordsworth (Britten) and Susanna (Mozart), as well as the Good Witch of the North (Glinda) “La Strega Buona del Nord” in the Italian operatic version of The Wizard of Oz (Il Mago di Oz, Valtinoni) performed with Victorian Opera. At the Royal Academy, she was chosen to perform Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata and Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’amore in the Opera Scenes concerts, furthering her passion for the Italian Bel Canto repertoire.
Equally at home on the concert stage, Amelia was a soloist with the Melbourne Opera Orchestra in several concerts including the Bel Canto Spectacular, Mozart by Moonlight and Christmas with Silvie Paladino concerts. She has also been a soloist with Adlee Efraim Presents in the unique London salon art- and literature-inspired concerts “Shakespeare and Decorum” and “Juliet, Afira, Cavaradossi, Lensky”. She also recently performed as the Soprano Soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Orchestre de la Francophonie at the Maison Symphonique de Montreal.
Other performance highlights include the QANTAS “I Still Call Australia Home” TV advertisement campaign, Hugh Jackman’s Arena Tour, Channel 9’s Carols by Candlelight and singing as a soloist at the iconic 100,000 seat Melbourne Cricket Ground Boxing Day Test.
Amelia performed in her first opera when she was 15 years old, the world premiere of “The Magic Pudding” (Bowman) with Victorian Opera. From a young age, she had a strong foundational training in classical piano, classical ballet, choral singing and conducting, as well as in stage and screen acting from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA).
